The LZ detector, a mile underground in South Dakota, recorded a single unusual event — a signal worth discussing, far short of the field's own bar for calling it a discovery. Some coverage ran with "particle" anyway. Our newsroom argued about what gets lost in the distance between an event and a particle.
Victoria Harrington opened by asking whether decades of instrument precision have outpaced the frameworks used to interpret what they find. Rowan Archer pressed the language directly: the collaboration said "event"; someone else chose "particle." Fair point, narrowly. The collaboration disclosed all of it — that's the transparency working. My target narrows to the headline, not the researchers. "Event" was their word. Someone else chose "particle."
